Barcelona is located on the northeast coast of the Iberian Peninsula, facing the Mediterranean sea, in a plateau of about 5 km width limited by the mountain range of Collserola, the Llobregat river on the south and the Besós river on the north. It is 160 km (100 miles) south of the Pyrenees mountain range.Bordered by France to the north and the rest of Spain to the south, the "autonomous" region known as Catalonia is captured in its distinctive essence by its capital city - Barcelona. Very much a thriving part of democratic Spain, Barcelona and Catalonia have always been recognized, within Spain, as a culturally and linguistically unique entity.
Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot, dry summers. January and February are the coldest months, averaging temperatures of 10 °C. July and August are the hottest months, averaging temperatures of 25 °C.
Barcelona is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, due to its good climate and its cultural offerings. Barcelona houses several renowned museums as well as the unique modernist architecture. The city also has 4.5 km of beaches, from the historical Barceloneta to the newest, sandless bathing zone in the Forum.
Barcelona was able to showcase its colourful heritage to the rest of the world via the 1992 Summer Olympics. Those millions of worldwide viewers tuning into the Games, were able to accompany marathoners as they threaded their way past the major city sights, culminating in the final climb up Montjuic Park to the Olympic Stadium. By then, the central and colourful Ramblas, Ciutadella Park, the city's fascinating Gothic Quarter, the unfinished La Sagrada Familia by Gaudi, as well as the architect's whimsical apartment house, Casa Mila, were all familiar sights. At the Montjuic diving venue, Olympic divers twirled against a backdrop of Barcelona stretching to the Mediterranean.
Like so many major European cities, much of Barcelona's genuine charm and appeal is discovered below the surface of TV and other marketing images. The Olympic Games may have provided Barcelona with a shiny facelift and jumpstarted a new entrepreneurial spirit, yet the city's timeless appeal is found on one's two feet. There is no better way, than walking, in which to explore the city's historic streets and alleyways, and to rub shoulders with Barcelona's sophisticated and friendly citizenry.
